Baby acne is often confused with childhood acne or even infantile acne. It is not the same. Baby acne - also known as neonatal acne - only occurs in infants from birth to about four weeks of age. Infantile acne affects older infants.
There is no established baby acne treatment as such because the problem should disappear after four weeks of age. It is believed to be caused by hormones released by the mother during pregnancy. The hormones migrate to the fetus through the placenta and overstimulate the infant's sebaceous glands causing a temporary overproduction of skin oil and related acne. The effect of these hormones will decrease on their own. Therefore any attempt at a natural acne cure or any other type of acne cure would be unnecessary and potentially harmful.
The best known baby acne treatment is to gently wash the infant with baby soap and water. There is evidence that the application of creams or other solutions may actually aggravate the baby acne condition. If the acne persists long after the four week period, you should contact your doctor.
If your infant is three months of age or older and has acne, then the child probably has infantile acne or childhood acne and should be treated differently. If the child is in the age range of 3 months up to 8 years and has significant acne, the condition is highly unusual and should be taken very seriously. If this is the case you should contact your doctor immediately as it may indicate a more serious underlying condition.
Acne in children older than 8 years is potentially less serious as it may simply be an advance indication of pubescent acne. It is strongly recommended, however, that you contact your doctor in these cases anyway to be sure.
